Американо-китайское соглашение 1868, дополнившее Тяньцзинский договор 1858 [Reed Treaty]. Урегулировал вопросы двусторонней торговли и снял ограничения с иммиграции китайцев в США. Право китайцев на иммиграцию в США получило формальное подтверждение в договоре Берлингейма [ Burlingame Treaty] (1868), но на Западном побережье конкуренция между китайцами и местным населением привела к анти-китайской пропаганде, усилившейся во время экономического спада 70-х гг. XIX вв. Кульминацией конкуренции стали антикитайские бунты 1877 в г. Сан-Франциско. В 1879 Конгресс принял закон, значительно ограничивавший въезд китайцев, но президент Р. Хейс [ Hayes, Rutherford Birchard] наложил на него вето. Тем не менее, закон об "исключении китайцев" 1882 на 10 лет полностью запретил иммиграцию китайцев. Действие закона было продлено в 1892 еще на 10 лет и в 1902 - на неограниченный срок.
